Place, Story, and Inequality in New Orleans: An Alternative Spring Break Trip

DCAL is proud to partner with the Dartmouth Center for Social Impact and Dartmouth housing communities to facilitate house-based Alternative Spring Break programs.

In Winter 2019, members from Allen House traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana to study the effects of Hurricane Katrina and the levee breaches in the city’s Lower Ninth Ward. This part of the city was severely impacted by Katrina’s flooding and has had the slowest recovery rate of all the neighborhoods in New Orleans to date. Over spring break, trip participants worked with the organization lowernine.org to restore homes in the Lower Ninth Ward, while also spending intentional time together exploring how place and inequality are related to the lasting effects of the storm.
