The Gateway Initiative was an effort aimed at enhancing learning and classroom pedagogy in "gateway" courses, i. e. courses that are required for entry into the discipline and have large enrollments by necessity, but not by design.
The goal of the Gateway Initiative, which launched in 2013, was to use research based methodologies to redesign traditional introductory (larger enrollment) courses to achieve the learning goals of small upper division courses.
Faculty worked with teams of instructional designers, librarians, media educators, learning fellows, and experts in assessment and evaluation to develop, run, evaluate, and continuously improve their courses.
During its tenure, the Gateway program has worked with 23 faculty to redesign 14 larger-enrollment foundational courses at Dartmouth.
