The Academic Honor Principle, adopted by faculty and the student body in 1962, outlines broad expectations of honesty and integrity in academic work and provides the foundation for one of Dartmouth’s core standards of conduct. In 2023, this standard remains the key guideline by which the Committee on Standards evaluates allegations and determines sanctions when appropriate. The Honor Principle is referenced in nearly every course syllabus and first-week class conversation, and the message is clear: Don’t cheat! Yet, engaging with the Honor Principle in the contexts of our classrooms can lead to moments of frustration and ambiguity for both faculty and students. What, exactly, is considered cheating? By whom, and in what context? What's the difference between a mistake and a violation? Can academic expectations look different by discipline, by individual class, by assignment, by student?

This series of community conversations aims to surface questions, concerns, strategies, and best practices for navigating academic integrity in the Dartmouth context. Lunch will be provided.
