Between the nearly-fully remote past several terms and the anticipated return to fully in-person classes lies Summer Term 2021–a time of transition from limited to less limited campus access and ambiguity for both faculty and students. With many classes designated as “on campus” but some students still registered or attending remotely, instructors may encounter some new challenges in their teaching. And importantly, while technology can help to ease some of this burden, the majority of campus classrooms are not equipped for simultaneous hybrid teaching or real-time interaction.

How will instructors of summer classes create equivalent opportunities for all students to learn and engage? If needed, can instructors teach both remote and on-campus students? How will students work with one another across potential gaps in time and distance? How will they interact with course content? How can instructors assess all students fairly?  

Despite some limitations, there are teaching strategies and tools that can help. Please join DCAL for an informal discussion about the landscape for teaching that you foresee this summer and the approaches that we recommend for as smooth a transition as possible.
