The Teaching and GenAI Initiative: Learning Opportunities and Teaching Grants
As Dartmouth faculty consider whether, when, and in what contexts AI-enhanced approaches truly support deeper learning, the Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning (DCAL) and Learning Design and Innovation (LDI) offer support in building AI literacy, experimenting with emerging tools, and designing thoughtfully for teaching and learning.
Through the Teaching and GenAI Initiative, DCAL and LDI work with educators to advance GenAI literacy in service of student-centered learning. The initiative is anchored by three key components: the institute, the grant, and programming.

Listening sessions on AI experiences
Informal discussions about topics like: which AI tools you reach for and why, how much you trust AI-generated answers versus other sources, and whether expectations around AI use in your work and research feel clear

Past events
Below are some examples of teaching and learning events and discussions that took place in the past year. (Some include summary links.)
- The Teaching with GenAI Institute was a two-day interactive workshop that offered a supportive environment for Dartmouth educators to explore Dartmouth-hosted AI tools, talk through pedagogical possibilities and hurdles, and co-create ideas.
- A conversation with Yale professor, editor, and acclaimed author Meghan O'Rourke, to explore and discuss writing and teaching in the age of generative AI.
- A student-faculty round table discussion—an exchange of ideas and experiences exploring GenAI use and purposes; what students wished faculty understood about GenAI and learning and vice versa; GenAI course policies that have worked for students and for faculty; ways in which GenAI has changed the relationship between faculty and students.
- Faculty perspectives on teaching with GenAI, a conversation with Dartmouth faculty who experimented with GenAI in their courses.
Generative AI Teaching Grants
Dartmouth instructors planning to experiment with GenAI in their courses can apply for a grant. Grantees are paired with a member of the grant team who consults with the instructor on implementation and gathers student feedback. Grantees will submit a description of their GenAI intervention and reflection on the work. GenAI grants offer a stipend of $1,500 upon completion.
The grant application will reopen in early November.
