Graduate Student Appreciation Week in Photos

In collaboration with the Graduate Student Council, the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies celebrated the graduate student population with a number of events and surprises across campus during the first full week of April.

This was the first time in two years the annual celebration was able to be held in person. All week, events were held to demonstrate appreciation for the work of the graduate students in labs and classrooms, and the many contributions they make in support of the academic and social community at Dartmouth.

A highlight of the week was the outstanding graduate student teacher appreciation lunch hosted by the Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning. Graduate teaching assistants who were nominated by students from the undergraduate classes they taught, were invited to a celebration lunch attended by Dean Jon Kull, and hosted by Cindy Rosalbo, Senior Associate Director of DCAL. As certifcates were presented, Rosalbo read from the nomination statements submitted by the undergraduate students in praise of their graduate student teachers. Comments from the undregraduates celebrated the TAs as being "an incredible mentor,"and "extremely patient." Many gave examples of how their TA had gone above and beyond to make sure the class was. well-prepared and understood the material. Such examples included: "she would guide me through the process and make sure that I really internalize the techniques," "he would routinely stay after the scheduled time answering questions any of us may have," and "he is patient and empathetic in answering questions and helping students problem solve in tough situations."

Many giveaways, lunches, and parties were organized throughout the week, perhaps the highlight being the 3-Minute Thesis contest held on Thursday, April 8 with seventeen graduate researchers presenting their work to be in with a chance to take home a $500 prize and trophy. Reed Bratches, from the Dartmouth Institute, took this accolade for his presentation on how to support family caregivers by understanding and improving the communication of information from clinic visits.
