Opening Access through Canvas Legally

Faculty Workshop

Thursday, October 27, 2016
12:00pm – 1:00pm
DCAL, 102 Baker Library
Intended Audience(s): Faculty
Categories: Workshops & Training
Registration required.

Learn about tools you can use in Canvas (and on other course web sites) to make it both easy and legal for your students to access the materials with which you most want them to engage.  We’ll discuss questions such as:

  • How do I know my use of copyrighted materials for teaching falls under 'Fair Use'?
  • Is it OK to post PDFs of articles, chapters, or video materials in my Canvas site, and how much can I post?
  • I want some – but not all – of my Canvas website to be publicly available to all– how does that work?
  • What can students download after the course is over?

During this session, Dartmouth librarians and instructional designers will work with faculty to find answers to these common but complex questions.  Using best practices, tools such as Creative Commons licenses, and open educational resources, you will be able to make the best use of open access, copyright, and Fair Use to improve access for your students.

This workshop requires some experience with Canvas or with developing a course web site.

Instructors:  Barbara DeFelice and Scott Millspaugh
